J.T. and Amy Crawford purchased the property in March 2021, but their connection to this land goes back much further. The couple first met at Emporia State University in 1992, and one of their earliest dates took them fishing at the Marais Des Cygnes River, which flows alongside the property they now own. On that day, J.T. introduced Amy to the old farmstead. He had always admired its charm, and Amy, too, fell in love with its peaceful beauty. They shared a dream of one day owning a place like it. Little did they know, more than three decades later, that dream would become a reality, and they would have the chance to restore this piece of local history.
J.T. and Amy both dedicated their lives to education. For years, they’ve been deeply involved in the community, teaching in North Lyon County and Osage City Schools. Since 1997, they’ve lived in rural Reading, raising three children—Claire Thomas (married to Corey), Reid Crawford, and Greta Crawford—while balancing the demands of their teaching careers. Their deep roots in the area and love for the local culture played a significant role in their desire to preserve the property, which they later named The Riverview.
After purchasing the farm in 2021, the couple set out on a mission to restore the house and land, breathing new life into the historic site. The Crawford family saw the restoration as more than just a personal project—it was an opportunity to preserve a piece of Kansas history and create a lasting legacy for future generations.
Inspired by their passion for the region and a shared commitment to preserving its past, they’ve poured their hearts into reviving the property, blending the farm's rich history with thoughtful, modern touches. Their vision extends beyond their own family; they hope The Riverview will be a place where future generations can gather, explore, and find the same peace and connection to the land that they felt all those years ago.
The restoration is ongoing, but J.T. and Amy view it as a labor of love—a way to not only protect a cherished piece of the community’s heritage but also to inspire others to appreciate the value of history, nature, and family. Through their dedication, they are ensuring that The Riverview’s story will continue for many years to come.
